12 Acne Myths And Facts

Acne is a very common skin condition where the pores of your skin clog. These clogged pores cause acne. They are also called pimples, an inflammatory disorder of the skin. It’s most common among teenagers and young adults because hormonal changes occur in their bodies at this age. However, it can also occur during adulthood, more commonly in adult women. An estimated 80% of people ages 11 to 30 will have at least a mild form of acne.

There are many myths exist about acne that may discourage people from receiving the necessary care or choosing the best skin care products. Here are twelve common acne myths and the real facts behind each one.

Acne Myth 1: "Acne is caused by eating certain foods"

Fact: While a diet high in processed foods and sugar may contribute to skin inflammation, there is no scientific evidence linking specific foods to acne breakouts. There is no proven connection between chocolate, pizza, potato chips, French fries, cheeseburgers, etc., and acne outbreaks.

Acne myth 2: "Acne is caused by poor hygiene"

Fact: Acne is caused by a combination of factors, including hormonal changes, genetics, and certain skin care products. While maintaining good hygiene is important, it is not the sole cause of acne. In fact, washing your face more frequently or scrubbing too vigorously can irritate the skin and make acne worse.

Acne myth 3: "Only teenagers get acne"

Fact: Although acne most frequently appears in adolescents, it can affect people of all ages, including adults as mentioned before. Hormonal changes and certain medications can trigger acne breakouts in adults.

Acne Myth 4 : "Popping pimples makes them go away sooner"

Fact: If you pop your pimples, it can make acne worse by spreading bacteria and causing inflammation. This can also lead to scarring and the development of new pimples.

Acne Myth 5: "Acne will go away on its own"

Fact: Acne typically does not resolve on its own. Without treatment, acne can often progress and worsen. Acne can persist for years if left untreated. It is important to seek proper treatment to manage acne and prevent scarring.

Acne Myth 6: "Sun exposure will cure acne"

Fact: Sun exposure may temporarily dry out the skin and reduce the appearance of acne, but prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun can irritate skin and result in more acne. It can also damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, sun exposure can worse acne by increasing oil production.

Acne Myth 7: "Using more acne products will get rid of acne faster"

Fact: If you overuse acne products, they can dry out the skin and in turn trigger more breakouts. It is important to use products as directed and to seek the advice of a dermatologist if necessary.

Acne Myth 9: "Acne can only be treated by prescription medications"

Fact: For those with mild or moderate acne, over-the-counter options such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can help to manage acne, but for people who have very serious acne, prescription medications are likely the most effective choice in managing acne. It is important to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best treatment for individual skin needs.

Acne Myth 10: "Acne is only a cosmetic issue"

Fact: Many people think that acne is only a cosmetic issue, but in reality, acne can have a significant impact on a person's self-esteem and mental health; especially for teenagers and young adults. It is important to seek proper treatment (prescribed or over the counter) to manage acne and improve one's quality of life.

Acne Myth 11: "Makeup causes acne"

Fact: Most people think that makeup causes acne, however this is untrue. Makeup will only irritate your skin if you’re using the wrong products. Foundations that are oil-free, non-comedogenic, and lightweight won’t cause any issues. It is important to remember to remove your makeup at night and wash your face before bed to remove any makeup and oil.

Acne Myth 12: "Acne treatment just doesn’t work"

Fact: Some people think that acne cannot be cured, but this is not at all true. Today, there are several effective and safe treatments that you can undergo to help solve acne. You should first try over the counter available treatments, but if there is no improvement, consider seeing a dermatologist.
